We all know that your wedding day is probably one of THE most expensive days of your life. With that in mind, it’s so important that you make your budget work hard for you!
When it comes to décor, there are several things you can do to make the most of your budget.
1. Repurpose
Whatever you use in your ceremony area, repurpose in your reception scheme. Flowers from your ceremony table can become top table flowers. If you’ve used lanterns down the aisle, these could be used as your centrepieces. If you’ve used flower meadows down the aisle, they can be used either in front of the top table or as the centre pieces on your guest tables. Just make sure you have agreed with your venue who will move them for you, as you may need to task a friend.
2. Focal backdrops
If you opt for a focal backdrop, ie a dressed arch or moongate, plan how to use it in more than one location. They are great behind the top table, cake table or even as your photobooth background. Make sure you check the height of any doorway you plan to move items through to make sure there’s enough headroom. Again, be clear who will be moving them!
3. Consider alternatives to fresh flowers
Yes, we all love fresh flowers, but they’re expensive (and die shortly after which always make me sad). Consider going for greenery on your table, or using silk flowers. Good silk flowers are often so good, you have to touch them to work out if they’re real or not! Buying silk can be expensive, but you can rent them instead.
4. Favours
If you choose to have them, make your favours work hard for you. Ideally they should be multipurpose. If they can be labelled in any way, they’ll save you both time and cost creating separate name cards. One of my recent favourites were tiny little plants with names written on the pots; another a little shot bottle which were individually named.
5. Bud vases
If you’re using bud vases, there are 2 ways to cut the cost. Firstly, don’t buy them all. Look into hiring them. Alternatively, start looking at everyday household items differently! Reed diffusers often come with a beautiful little bottle. Little bottles of drink are often perfectly sized. You just need to soak the labels off! Be wary of using jam jars as the wide neck means you need lots of flowers to fill them.
Secondly ask your florist to supply a bucket of flowers with your bouquets, and pop single stems into bud vases yourselves, which will remove the labour cost of the florist.
